Adding Terrain to the Level
Now, we have a new, empty level, which will look like this:
Not very exciting, is it? You will probably want to add some variation to the terrain, such as hills, mountains, maybe a lake? There are three main ways to do this - you can have Sandbox automatically generate a heightmap (and then sculpt that heightmap to fit your needs), you can sculpt it manually from scratch or import a heightmap you have made in another tool, such as World Machine.
We'll go through all three of these possibilities over the next few pages.
To finish off, we'll discuss how to give your terrain some texture and make it look like something you might find in a level instead of the default checkerboard tiles.
